Tools in AI-Public
AI-Public offers various tools that enable the AI assistant to actively perform tasks for your public institution or government organization. These tools allow the AI to go beyond just text generation and actually look up information, perform calculations, and create content.

Gemini 3 and newer can combine suitable Google-native and universal tools. Older Gemini models use only the native toolset when native tools are active. See the Google native tools page for more information.

Hidden automatic tools
In addition to the visible tools, AI-Public also uses hidden automatic tools. These tools are not listed in the tool settings and users cannot manually enable or disable them. They assist the assistant only when necessary.
An example is Chat history search (chat_history_search). This allows the assistant to find relevant previous chats from the same user, for example when you ask to continue earlier work. The tool only searches within the chat history of the logged-in user, within the same environment and retention period. The assistant receives compact metadata and relevant fragments, not full chat transcripts.
Enabling tools
Administrators can enable or disable tools via:
- Go to Administration → Settings
- Select Tools
- Toggle the desired tools on or off
Only enable the tools your organization actually needs. Some tools incur additional costs per use.
Using tools
When a tool is enabled, the AI can automatically use it when relevant. You can also explicitly request to use a tool:
- "Search the internet for the latest changes in WMO legislation"
- "Create a visualization of demographic development in our municipality"
- "Calculate the travel time to the nearest municipal facilities"
You can also start a tool directly from the home screen. AI-Public will then open a new chat with that tool active. For many tools, an example prompt is already in the input field, so you only need to fill in the missing data. For Weather query, for example, you enter the location. For AI content detection, the check question is ready and you paste the text to be checked under the heading Text:.
